Pre-Pitch Signals

Ruling Question

What did you see in the play?

  1. BR is out on catch. R2 is out on force at 2nd. Inning over.
  2. R2 is out on force at 2nd. R3 scores. Inning over.
  3. BR is out on catch. R2 is out on live ball appeal. R3 scores.
  4. BR is out on catch. R2 is out on live ball appeal. R3 does not score.

Correct Ruling

BR is out on the catch. R2 is out on appeal at second for the third out, and R3's run scores if R3 touched home before the appeal out.

Bonus Question

What if R2 successfully retouched second before F6 received the throw and appealed?

  1. R2 would still be out because he originally left before the catch.
  2. R2 would no longer be out for leaving early, and play would continue with runners at their resulting bases.
  3. The ball would become dead and R2 and R3 would return to their time-of-pitch bases.
  4. The batter-runner would be called out instead because the defense threw behind R2.
