NFHS Case Play Challenge
Detached Glove? Now What?
No runners, no outs. B1 hits a lazy fair fly ball over F9's head in right field.
Pre-Pitch Signals
- No runners
- No outs
Ruling Question
F9 intentionally throws his detached glove, and the glove contacts the fair batted ball in right field. What is the correct ruling?
- Detached-equipment obstruction. B1 is awarded two bases.
- Dead ball immediately; award B1 second base.
- Dead ball immediately; award B1 third base.
- Signal the detached-equipment violation, allow play to continue, and award B1 third base.
Correct Ruling
Intentionally thrown detached player equipment that touches a fair batted ball results in a three-base award from the time of pitch. This is not an immediate dead ball.
Bonus Question
What if R2 successfully retouched second before F6 received the throw and appealed?
- R2 would still be out because he originally left before the catch.
- R2 would no longer be out for leaving early, and play would continue with runners at their resulting bases.
- The ball would become dead and R2 and R3 would return to their time-of-pitch bases.
- The batter-runner would be called out instead because the defense threw behind R2.
